OK experts, I need some advice. My "workshop" is a corner of my basement. I have a small 12" planer that I use to plan wood to the correct thickness. My problem is the mess of wood shavings that it throws all over the place. Anyone have any advice how to corral all those shavings in mostly one place?

I keep a box under the outfeed table and it catches most of the shavings.

I attach an oversized trash bag with clamps on the out feed side and it catches most of it. Makes it a little bit of a hassle to get the wood out to run the next pass but I finds it worth it and only takes a few minutes to set up and get used to it.

i'm kinda with duck i got mine a little high and got an over sized trashcan at the out feed it works great for catching the most of it. if your planing solid wood not plywood or pressure treated wood the hamsters just love it.i've even planed down full boards just for that purpose LOL darn little creatures >:(

Hey Donna, I have a dust collector that hooks up to all my large dust producing machines. My planer has a dust chute that the dust collector hose connects to. If your planer does not have a dust chute, one can be made with some sheet metal or possibly ordered from the manufacturer.
Take a look around at some of the woodworker stores web sites and check out dust collectors.

My 15" powermatic has a dust chute also. I don't have a dust collector, but I hook up the hose from my shop vac and it does help. I do the same on my 16" drum sander.

I have a DeWalt DW735 planer and it REALLY kicks out the chips!! I tried several ways to corral the mess but nothing really worked until I bought a dust collector.
The difference is AMAZING! I thought about hooking up my shop vac but, the instruction book said not to do that as the planer would just clog up the vac hose.
Dust collectors are not cheap but, I really don't think anything else is going to do the job very well. Especially inside the basement.
I do my planing in the garage and now, with the dust collector, you cant even tell that I have used the planer when I'm done.
I have a fairly small Jet dust collector, not sure of the part number. (E171548?)

I have mine hooked to my dust collection system also. Catches about 90+% of the shavings. :)

I have mine hooked to a broom and dust pan--works for me--it in the garage , so when I'm done picking up most for the dust --I blow the rest out the garage door--Richard aka thumbs

I tried mine on the dust extractor but it kept on blocking so now I use it out side and have a very large wool sack that catches a good percentage of the chips and I just sweep the rest up

On a serious side, Our last remaining saw mill in the valley, experienced a fire in their planer shed and their extractor bins got hot enough to peal the paint off before the FD got it put out. Start of the fire is open to conjecture. Good old friction is at the top of the list.
Pays to be careful and get rid of it as best you can, I generally use it as mulch and put it around flowering shrubs, saves on watering and keeps weeds from germinating. It can be just scattered thinly and nature will take care of it.

I have mine on wheels. Take it out on the driveway and either sweep it to the flower beds or sweep it up. Be careful about what goes in the flower beds - some of it will kill your plants.
