I read somewhere that you can not stain Popler wood!  Can some one give me some advice on this.

Thanks

By nature Poplar tends to be 'blotchy'....

Therefore staining it will accent this trait depending on the coloration of the wood itself.

I personally have not had good results with stains of any kind and poplar.
Others have suggested using a 'sealer'.

Thanks for the information.  So far I have been just dipping it ito lemon oil like Steve showed on the u-tube and it works fine that way, but I was hoping to beable to us it with different stains.

Aspen or Maple are nice light woods that accept stains very well.

I do use some MAple. both soft and hard, and you are right, they do stain nicely.

Try a nice coat of shellac on poplar first.  That seems to help with the blotching..JMHO

and use a spoon or even better a small cloth to apply the stain, that is by far more constant than using a brush.

Oh and use (single-use)gloves - your wife will not like the color of your hands, nether will the children telling you to go and wash them properly  ::) :o :-\

I recently asked a similar question about staining poplar, wanting to use a darker stain.  The concensus was that I should use a sealer on the wood, then stain. There are a number of ways to seal, but I had a can of wood sealer I hadn't ever used, so tried that and it worked well. You can see this under "Darken BLO" on the third page of these posts, or just go to http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=5936.0.
