Title: sanding sealer
Post by: thumbs on April 15, 2011, 03:37:41 pm
I just finished  a Bible box by Steve Good--Well not quite finished yet.--I wiped on some BLO and wondered if sanding sealer would have helped with the end grain of the walnut I used. I have never used the sealer so I really don't know--Has any one used sanding sealer?? also does it help with the softer parts of the wood??--Richard aka thumbs :-\ :-\ :-\

Yes, sanding sealer will help with blotching and end grain. Also shellac does the same thing.
If you sand end grain with a finer grit (220 to 400) than the surface, that also will help keep it to a closer color of the long grain of the wood used.
Hope that helps for next time.

You can get shelac in a spray can form at home depot for about 7 bucks.  I found this finish will add a lot of depth and richness to the grain in exotic woods after the blo finish i first used to bring out the grain.  More expensive than the normal poly but results can be better for me if you want your finish to pop.

If you are using sanding sealer and put oil on top of it the oil will not penetrate the wood, and as a rule you do put sanding sealer on top of oil
