Title: Hello from Cincinnati, Ohio
Post by: Primus on April 09, 2011, 10:21:10 pm
I am 55 year old beginner with the scroll saw, even though I have been building Shaker style furniture for a few years.  I have a woodworking shop with every tool I need to build furniture but I just recently thought I would try the scroll saw.  Not as easy as I had imagined.  I have a couple questions that I could not find the answers to in the books I have read and the vidios.
1. What am I doing wrong when the wood gets caught on the blade and flaps up and down.
2. What is the trick to making sharp turns in a pattern, for instance going into and coming out of a "V" shape.
Any help would greatly appreciated.

Jack

Hey Jack, Welcome to the forum. I'm Dan from Southern California.

for your first question, What kind of wood and thickness are you using, and what kind of blades? If you are using a reverse tooth blade, the lower reverse teeth will cause the board to bounce up and down if you don't hold the board down firmly. For this reason I recommend beginners start with a non reverse tooth blade such as an Olsen skip tooth.
For your second question, cut to the end of the v, then back out a little, turn the wood so the teeth cut into the waste then back the backside of the blade into the corner then turn the board into the line. I hope this makes sense to you!

Hi Jack, I'm Julie from Texas.  Welcome to the forum.  Your first question is easy.  It's called "chatter" and is usually caused by a reverse tooth blade.  Just hold it down a little firmer and that will stop it.  Second, to get sharp corners, back up a little and spin your workpiece in the waste area.  Then back the blade back in and continue cutting.  Go to www.sheilalandrydesigns.com   She did a video of one of her candle trays recently and it shows her doing it over and over again.

Thanks for the warm welcome from all of you.  Julia, I think I got it from the video you recommended, thank you.  I'll have to practice.

Hi Jack,
Welcome from London, Ontario.  I know you will solve your 'chatter' and 'V' dilemmas with the advice you've already received.  Just remember.... practice makes it better.  No one can do the difficult scroll saw patterns until they have had lots of practice with simpler ones.

Have fun,
Jim
