Title: Mirror Backer
Post by: Gabby on April 09, 2011, 12:43:00 am
I was just looking at a piece of scroll work and the Idea struck me.
Has anyone ever used a mirror as a backer?
If so.
How well did it work out?

I dont get out and about much any more, but I'm thinking a Dollar store might have some cheap.
A glass and window shop would probably custom cut one, but I haven't a clue how much it would cost.
A mirror from an old bathroom vanity could be salvaged and maybe even free, cut to size, glass cutters are cheap the kind with the little wheel, and scribe. Just thinking of options.

will there's no dollar store here where i live or glass store. i cut an old mirror one time and when you look in it everything looked wavy and over time what ever is inside the glass that makes a mirror all fell down it was like fine silver foil. but i did see somewhere in a woodcraft magazine you could buy cut able acrylic mirrors you buy them in sheets and cut the size and shape you want it. i can't seem to find the magazine anywhere.

Good Thought, Dan....

Most likely cheaper than a glass outlet and a hell of a lot easier to CUT!
I HATE messing with glass almost as bad as the WASTE side of plumbing!

I know this is late but maybe it will be seen. I use mirrored acrylic graphic sign material that I get where I work. Any sign maker should be able to find it for you. The brand I use is called FDC.

Hi Gabby, we used to put glass or acrylic behind fretwork where I used to work and it is fine, only thing I would say is it can be a pain in the butt to cut. Also you will have to use an adhesive which will not remove the silvering from the back of the mirror if you intend laying the mirror into the frame. If you're fixing the wood to the face of the mirror, heavy duty double sided tape will do the job. The adhesive we used for the silvered side of the mirror was Evostik Mirror adhesive. I am quite sure you will have something similar on your side of the POND. Good luck from Scotland. RR

Thank you RR I have a stack of mirrors about 12" by 12", left over from a wedding held here on our property. Haven't come up with anything to use them on as yet, but they are in the back of my mind for the future. Your tips will come in handy.  ;D

Gluing wood to glass can be done!

I have a product, "E6000" that I get from Michael's that will glue almost anything TO almost anything!

I most recently used it to glue some Brazillian Agate 'slices' to frosted glass for a lampshade that a friend made.

Good Stuff!

I like the idea of the double sided tape. I had to replace some carpet tape a while back. It had finally worked free of the carpet but where it was stuck to the wood floor was a bugger to get off, really strong rubbery adhesive it would probably hold nearly anything solid or smooth together. It came loose from the carpet since it isn't much of either one and the fibers tore loose from the adhesive the dirt that works it's way through the carpet probably didn't help either.
Dirt in my house????? Nah, with 4 dogs and a cat there couldn't be any dirt!!!!    ;D
LOL

does sound like a cool idea. I know they are few and far between but up here in MN we have an IKEA store. They sell small mirrors pretty inexpensive.

Since the last time I responded to this thread, I learned something else about glass.
We needed to alter my wife's sewing table which has a glass top. Took it to the glass shop it turned out it was TEMPERED glass and can't be cut.
As I recall their explanations, the glass is cut to size before tempering. At any rate I had to buy a piece of untempered glass to the reduced dimentions.
Why is it that it costs so darn much to learn these little gems?  ???

I used a mirror finish as a backer in a clock I made, I used 4mm birch ply painted matt black then stuck some of the reflective film you can get at car shops, the stuff they put on inside of car windows to give the mirror effect. It only cost me £6.99 for a 3 metre long roll of it 1 metre wide, and it worked well. hope it helps
