Title: where to buy a sanding mop?
Post by: nickchalker on March 20, 2011, 10:33:35 pm
Hi everyone.  I was wondering if anyone knew where the best place was to buy a sanding mop?  I saw the one on Steve's blog from the makers of the sandflee, but I couldn't find it on their web site.  I found one on Rockler.com, but I wasn't wanting to spend $50.00 if i had to.  Any help?
Nick

Thanks for the help!  Seeing their site just raised more questions for me like the diameter and width plus the way to attach it to my grinder base.  I emailed them to see if they could help me out as well.

Hey Nick, I have two mops. A 120 grit and a 220 grit both 2X6 in size. I mount them in either a drill chuck in my mini lathe or in my drill press. I do not have them permanently mounted. I just chuck them up when needed.

I have two also...2 X 6...180 grit and 220 grit and just use a clamp to hold my $12.99 harbor freight drill on the edge of the table for use

Well heck, Dan...beats the hell out of standing on my head trying to use the drill press.
Just lay that drill on its side, use my Irwin clamp, push the trigger and hold in the 'continuous run' button and away I go.
If the drill wears out it was sure cheap enough!

I also have been looking at sanding mops and have looked at Kingspor online and almost ordered but decided to see if I could find the materials locally. Yesterday I found a suitable manderel but could only find a roll of 1.5", 120 grit sandpaper. I cut the strips 4" long and arranged the strips back to back and clamped a piece of scrap wood on each side. I used my old, dull blades to cut 5 lines on each end. I got one end cut from each blade used, I knew that they would come in handy for something.... When I unclamped the sandpaper it actually was much more manageable than when I was stacking it because of the cuts. I only have 34 strips rather than 48 but it seems to work ok. This only cost me $12 at Canadian Tire and now that I have used it I will be ordering a 2" sandpaper roll from Kingspor to make another mop.

Way to go Bruce, done mine similar to you, 2inch wide strips 6 inches long hole drilled in the centre, arrange the pieces back to back then onto a mandrel chucked on the drill press and Bob's your uncle, easy peasy..

Steve had the instruction for making your own mop on his web site.

Well, heck!!  I never thought about making my own.  Sounds easy and cheap enough, I think I might try that!  I did hear back from Klingspor's this morning, but of course they suggested the most expensive set up that they have.  Was gonna cost me about $50.00 over all.  Thanks everyone for your knowledge, I know I will call on it again!!

Great site Graybeard!  This might be a silly question, but are "sanding mops" and "sanding stars" the same thing?   They look pretty similar...
