Title: Blades-I am struggling with which one or ones to use
Post by: SD Scroller on February 28, 2011, 12:00:32 am
Hi,

I have an older hegner scroll saw and mostly cut pine.  I had a variety pack of blades that came with the saw, but now that i have tried the flying dutchman blades, which are like cutting butter with a hot knife in comparison to the other blades in my opinion.

So i used the FD-PSR #5 blade which seemed too small for me, but it could be that i was used to using substandard blades.

I want to move into other woods but i feel that i need to get a better understanding of the blades before i take on that adventure.

Any ideas from anyone?

Thank you in advance,

Mike

Try the FD-SR - nice ones!! They are my favorites.
The choice of blade number depends mostly on the thickness of the wood. For fine stuff the FD-UR is also neat.

Regardless of the wood you use, a #3, 5, and 7 are going to be the most commonly used blades.  I personally prefer a reverse tooth blade because it produces a cleaner cut on the bottom side of your work.  I use both Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse FD-UR and Olson Platinum.  There is not a significant difference between the two.  The thickness of the wood and the detail in the design is what is used in determining what blade to use.

You said it right when you said it didn't "feel right".  You need to experiment with your blades and see what feels right to you.  We all have our personal favorites and use different blades for different things.  There are a couple of charts out there to help determine where to start.

SD Scroller,
As Julie said, you need to find the blades that "feel" right to YOU.  One place to start might be another variety pack of blades.  I recommend ordering a variety pack of the Flying Dutchman blades from here http://www.mikesworkshop.com/  Mike will take good care of you, and he doesn't delay in getting your order out to you!  Try them all and you'll definitely be able to narrow down your choices.  However, I'm willing to put money on the fact that you'll end up choosing the FD-SR or FD-UR in the 1,3,5 and 7 sizes.  There's a reason why so many use/recommend these blades!  Good luck!

I like the FD blades UR and TC very much!
The # depends on the thickness of the wood and your personal preference.
Mike has a set of blades with all type perhaps you should try that.
