How tall can a tree grow?
David
In an article written in 2004 and featured in the weekly magazine Nature, it states that theoretically, the tallest possible height that any tree could obtain is 400-425 foot. This is because of gravity and the friction between water and the vessels of the tree through which it flows.

Interesting tidbit there David. 425ft would be a whole lot of board feet! I bet, given the opportunity, old mother nature would once again prove all these theorists/scientists wrong. Like "nothing can live in the extreme pressures at the bottom of the oceans" or that based on Newton's laws a bumble bee can't fly. Mother nature does what she feels like doing, regardless of all the theories! Either way, thanks again for the info David!! ;D

Hi David,
Amazing facts.
As you know nature is alway greater than science ;)
In your Sunday facts you told us that in 1872 there was an eucalyptus tree that was 435 feet long, so I guess that your research is better than that of the writers of the article in 2004. ;)
lessons to learn: the difference between theoretically an practice is about 10 feet 8)

;D LOL you saw it to Marcel, I wondered if anybody would spot the 10ft difference. Mainewoods as you see mother nature has already proven these guys wrong.

yeah nature is great, the Guy who made the blueprint must be awesome ;)
And then again, what is 10 feet extra lenght for a tree?
assuming your not a bonzai tree ;D :D ;D HAHAHA
-
Mother Nature has no limitations. One day the scientists will figure that out. 8)

Engineers prove their own theories and calculations wrong. A helicopter should not fly either. An aeronautical engineer can prove to you on paper a helicopter will not fly, well I have flown in 3 different types of military helicopters.
Mother nature cannot be controlled and she will do as she d@mn well pleases.

Remember the line from an old TV commercial?
"It's not nice to fool mother nature!"
It's like the line from home...
"If Momma ain't happy...NOBODY is gonna be happy"!

That's interesting David, did it say how old the trees were that grow to this height? we have the giant Kauri trees that grow to 50 meters and are over 1500 years old and these are enormous around the base
