I got the ad this afternoon. I had never heard of it before it was on the wood fact a day thing, then it is everywhere.
I wasn't all that impressed with the picture of the wood, for being that old I expected somthing that looked a little cooler. Maybe it really hits you if you see it in person.

Figian kauri is not meant for much it does turn well but has to be dollied up NZ kauris is much the same but it is not available as a milled  wood only as swamp kauri, in other words it is against the law to cut a kauri tree, all the kauri available in NZ is from the swamps when these giant trees were flattened thousands of years ago and have been recovered over the years a lot of it is carbon dated back to 30 to 50 thousand years and is available at a price

Kauri Wood @ Woodcraft.com (http://www.woodcraft.com/Family/2082713/Ancient-Kauri-Wood.aspx)

seems to have a fine grain - might be good for toys or 3D-parts.

2" x 2" x 12"...$21.99 That's a little pricey for wood not meant for much. You could always buy one and put it on the mantel as a conversation piece.  8)

Looking at the pic on the web site they made a typo. It's 12"x12"x2" so thats 2 bf. It's the NZ swamp Kauri. If it shimmers like they say it does it might look nice when finished.

I bet it would make a beautiful bowl.

Bill - who's always been fascinated by wood turning.

I just had a look at that link and they say it NZ kauri, then it has to be swamp kauri as it is forbidden to harvest these trees, the price is a way over the top, we pay $5 a super foot [9"x9" x 2"] so you can work it out for your self, some one is making a sizable profit, the wood is dense but soft and would be suitable scrolling
