Has anyone cut the easter egg cross that Steve offered as a pattern last year? I would like to cut a few for a show I have 2 weeks before Easter. It looks like it may be a challenge. How would the pattern be applied to a wooden egg? Can I learn something from someone else's mistakes? Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't have a photo that I can lay my mouse on. I did one last year and it was actually pretty easy. Be sure to cut slow and I used a 6" clamp to hold my egg so it did not roll. I just applied the pattern the same as always.

I can't wait for the reply on this one because I raise chickens and have alot of Jumbo brown eggs I could use.

Yes it is and has been done but, I don't think you could do something that fragile with a scroll saw. Don't ask me how it is done but, I have seen them. I guessing an x-acto knife and a steady hand or maybe a dremel tool with a very small burr and a very steady hand.

I thought I'd have the ultimate tool - like a Binford 6100 ;D ;D
You know what? I'll try this one. The worst thing could be a broken egg shell.
I have seen these eggs too, I think most of them are made using a engraving milling machine for glass, which is pretty much the same as a dremel.

After you blow out the egg, rinse it with a 25% bleach solution, then water. After that, use a 50/50 solution of Elmers glue and water to coat the inside, several times. This will harden the shell enough to carve it with a dremel.
And you all thought I was just another pretty face! :D

Thanks for all the great replies. I watched the video and it looks like it should be very "do-able". I think I'm going to stick to the wooden eggs, though. You guys that want to do the real eggs..... good luck!

This is a pretty good idea - I'll try to coat the inside if the eggs do not want to participate.

I tried a real egg ones.
blown out the egg, let it dry and start cutting with the dremel.
wasn't a success.
small parts broke off.
So the tip from bill to put some glue in it sounds good to me.
maybe I will try this again before easter.

I really enjoyed making the video and eggs (about 60 of them). If you have any questions e-mail me at kpchastain@insightbb.com and we can hook up. I saw where someone used a clamp to hold the egg that might work ok but I found that it was hard to hold the egg flat.
This is a picture of some of the different was of cutting the egg after cutting it in half. That way it will lay flat.

There was no mention in the video I saw of cutting an egg in half. How do you safely hold the egg to cut it in half? Do you cut it in half using your bandsaw?
I'd like to see a link to that video...Please.

The egg in the video was only the second one I cut. After that I did a lot of different cuts. I used a band saw to cut the eggs in half. I made a lot of refrigerator magnets with the half eggs. After cutting a whole egg I started pushing the cross all the way out then cutting it in half so it would push out both sides with spacers in between.
