Title: 2004 Hawk Ultra - Variable Speed?
Post by: Crabbyboater on December 07, 2010, 10:43:04 am
I have the opportunity to buy a Hawk 220 Ultra brand new in an unopened box for $400. But don't know if it's variable speed.  It was bought in 2004 as a gift for a persons father, who passed away before ever using it.  Here's what the seller said in an email:

"I don't think this 220 HAWK Ultra Scroll Saw is variable speed. I think it would have had a 'VS' in the name. It does come with a video. I'm guessing the manual is in the box. However, I don't really want to open the box.

It was purchased by my parents in 2004. The invoice total which included some kind of Kit valued at $135, came to $1,253.48."

Anyone know if it would be a VS??  Sounds like a great buy, but I have a DW788 that I'd sell, and like to vary the speed.  Thoughts??

If you go to www.scrollsaws.com (http://www.scrollsaws.com) you will find yourself at Rick Hutchenson's site.  He is a saw expert and has an extensive site that has information regarding just about any saw.  If you don't find the information there, you can email him and I am sure he will get back to you quickly and help you out.  He is a wonderful guy and is more knowledgeable than anyone I know regarding saws.  Give him a try and I am sure you will find your answer. :)

I can't imagine a hawk that is not variable speed, even from 2004.

The Hawk Precision saws were 2 speed with a belt. I have one and a Scrollmaster, that is a copy made in Taiwan. Dennis

Thanks for your responses, Sheila, Dennis and Julie.  I just got back from buying the saw.  Seemed a bit odd to be opening a box sealed in 2004, but there it was, brand new, shiny and red.  It does have variable speed, so I'm happy.

Now I'll have to sell my 6 month old DeWalt 788.  Figure I can get $300 for it, so it'll only cost me $100 for the upgrade to the Hawk.

Hey Crabby, Why not keep the DeWalt as a spare? Or at least hold on to it till you are sure it is an upgrade from the Dewalt.

I would have to try one before I would consider it an "upgrade".
