Has anyone ever had one of those projects that make you say, ?If I can pull this off, I can do anything.?? Well, I think I just started one of those. I?m cutting Ton Mullane?s "Steam Engine" out of ?? Red Wood. The wood is from one of the beams that supported Tunnel 13, a railroad tunnel that collapsed in 2003. I thought the irony would be cool, not knowing that Red Wood cuts a little like Balsa. :-\

Hey Bill, Sounds like a challenging project. next time attach a 1/8" or 1/4" piece of Baltic birch to the front of the redwood. This will give you better control of the piece and wont be too soft to cut. Then when you are done, you will have two pieces cut!

I thought of doing that after about an hour's worth of cutting. :(

I have one of those projects that i have not mastered. I revisit it about every 6 months. I believe I'll be a true professional when I can cut that. Until then, practice, practice, practice.

I have a bunch of those projects that i have not mastered, and maybe never will. LOL 8)

Being a railfan, I can't wait to see how it turns out. I have that pattern, and plan to cut it when my skills improve.

Steven, I'll post it when I'm done.

Bill, I'll let you know when I start my first intarsia after Christmas. Dave 8)

Rightarm,
Now that you mention it, the first intarsia, the room divider, the first chess set....all these things fall into that category.

Your totally right about that. sometimes when I start something, I'll cut for awhile. Then I sit back and think, "why in the world did I start this"? dave 8)
-
Well, I was about 80% of the way done and the wood blew out...pretty much like it exploded...leaving a hole in the delicate section not quite the size of my fist.

That's when you throw it in the burn pile and move on. Chalk it up to experience, have a beer and start over!

I actually laughed when it happened, but I'm going to hold on to it for when Lisa gets home to see if I can get some pity se... er... back rub.

See if you can make something else out of it. Maybe a beer coaster! Dave 8)
