Title: wood question

What is the lightest weighted hardwood there is?  Jaun is needing to build shelves for the truck he is driving and does not want to make too many unnecessary holes.  Thanks in advance.

Hey Cherie, In terms of lightweight and strength, I think African Mahogany Is the lightest. Another lightweight wood is poplar. But the lightest is probable Basswood, But is not very strong. If your looking for a lightweight wood for shelves, I would choose Pine.

Pine would be your best bet make sure it is dry and avoid knots

Actually, balsa wood is considered to be a hard wood but of course, it wouldn't be very good for shelves.
If it were my choice, I would go for poplar. It is fairly inexpensive and available at the big box store, machines well and with a stain and a hard finish, doesn't look too bad. If looks are more important than cost, I would try mahogany or red wood for weather restance, weight and the looks too.
