Title: New Candle Tray and Charms for Halloween
Post by: scrollgirl on October 09, 2010, 05:15:58 pm
Hi, everyone! I just finished posting my latest candle tray and charm set for Halloween.  It is called Spooky Pumpkins.  I made it out of padauk and used spray shellac over oil for the finish on it.  This is the natural color of the wood.  The pattern is available on my site if anyone is interested.  Thanks so much for looking!

Sheila :)

That really is neat, Sheila.  Are you still running the special on 6??

Yes I am Julie.  I have eight designs now but I am keeping the special on any six for a bit more. :)  I am glad you like it!

Nice pumpkins, Sheila!

Will have to drop in and take a closer look. Might need a couple for the show on the 30th.

Very nice job.

Was the padauk hard to cut?  It looks about 1/2" thick.  How does it compare with say cherry or walnut?

Thank you all for the nice comments.  You really know how to make a girl feel good!

Karl - no it wasn't hard at all. It is 1/2" thick and I would compare it to walnut or maple or any hard wood.  Just be sure to use clear packaging tape over the entire design before you cut.  I do this all the time when using any hard wood.  Your wood doesn't burn at all and the blades last longer.  It is something to do with the adhesive in the tape that keeps things running cooler.  I used a #2 reverse tooth Olsen blade for the design part and a #5 for the outer and inner circles (the larger blade was more stable and allows me more control on a long cut like that!)  The wood is an incredible color and I used mineral oil (no odor) and after it dried, just a couple of light coats of spray shellac.  It gives a great finish and really brings out the color beautifully!

Thanks again all! Sheila :D

It is a nice looking wood.  It looks like Sapele as well.

Thanks and great job.
