Title: puzzles
Post by: Dav on September 26, 2010, 06:33:09 pm
these puzzlesI see people posting that stand alone I assume ard made out of 3/4 in. boards. Whats the best blade to you, are puzzle blades the flemzy for this and should I be using another size? haven't tried one yet but am thinking of it.

Depends on the size of puzzle.  For most of my 3/4" puzzles I use either a #5 or #7 reverse tooth blade either Olson Platinum or Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse tooth blades.  If there are alot of really tight turns I'll back up to a #3 but you have to be careful and slow down or the blade will bow and your pieces will not fit right.  The Puzzlers blades that flying dutchman has I only use for thin puzzles that require tight fitting pieces like when you make a puzzle out of a photo.  Hope this helps.

I normally use a #7 for the profile and a #5 for cutting the puzzle on 3/4" medium hard board

I am happy with my fine spirals.  the cuts might not be as fine as for photograph puzzles.
If you go to my site (I'm still working on it) and click on mythological puzzles then click on any one of them, you can see how they are cut.

I use Flying Dutchman reverse SkipTooth blades. Like Jimbo, I use #7 for the outside & # 5 for the internal cuts. I mostly use 3/4" pine shelving for my puzzles. I get seconds that are cheaper and arrange the pattern pieces around the knots/imperfections. Make sure you check the reverse side of the board for problems. I have cut a puzzle out only to find it had a "nice" strip of core wood right across the back!
I sand around all the cut pieces lightly,  to get rid of any fuzzies & to slightly round the edges, either with the dremel or by hand with a small roll of 240grit sandpaper.

I learn something new everyday!  Thanks!

Say Judy after checking out your site (Which is awesome by the way) I noticed the following, could you explain what it is please?

Each puzzle comes with a puzzle board for use in standing it upright and the secret solution.

The fine spirals I use are galaxy stock #45225 size 2/0   .024 diameter. 48 teeth per in.

I order from Wildwood designs.....      Mike's are good too but the kerf seems bigger.

That is a great site, Judy I love you puzzles, but I still can't get my head around the spirals, must be too impatient

I don't have a problem using spirals - I just don't get using them on puzzles.  I am going to try one just to see.  I would think the kerf would be too wide for a good fit.  Obviously not, Judy's puzzles look great.

Russ, Do you use them even on 3/4 and larger stock for stand up puzzles?

thanks for the compliments everybody.  I love doing the puzzles.  I package them in a plastic zip lock bag with a stiff backer board like the back of a tablet then stick an envelope to that which containes the secret solution which is just actually a small version of the pattern itself.

if you use a #3 SR make sure its a new and sharp. I have use the olsen #3 SR and some times I get a few bad dull blades. I now check to make sure that they are sharp.  I have use 3/4 think wood and cut the outside of the puzzle with a #9 SR olsen then I use the #3 SR of cutting out the rest of the puzzle woorks great.

Go to miksworkshop.com and click on the puzzle tutorial and video from Carter Johnson.
It depends how thick the wood is what blade to use. The FD-SP is a# 3/0 smaller as a 2/0.

I use shrink wrap on my puzzles.  It makes a real nice, easy to carry item.  I put a copy of the puzzle on the back side.   Got it at   bassflexiblepackaging.com
