I made my first bookmark from oak 0.26" thick.
I find the space between the moving part to narrow and I think that's because of the thickness of the wood.
I started to sand it down a bit but what should be the right thickness. ( to prevent the moving part from breaking)

I make mine 1/32" thick. Is yours just over 1/4"? That is pretty thick.

I think the thickest I would make bookmarks is 1/8" or .125" or 3.175mm. Thinner would make it work better. 8)

I knew 1/4" was to thick so I sanded mine down to 5/64" now, that's about 2 mm.
your 1/32" thats about 0.8 mm. thats quit thin! doesn't that break very easy ????
when I bend the inner part there is some tension and I'm afraid if I push harder that it will break.

I have not had any break. You can always do them at 1/16" if you are leary.

Also a bookmark is only suppose to hold a few pages, not 20 or 30. So it would only need to give a little. 8)

When I made my bookmarks I used 2 pieces of veneer with an adhesive tape between them. The total thickness is: 0.05". I stacked 5 together to scroll. There is a lot of flexibility in the bookmark.
Almost like a leather.
I think you need to use plywood instead of solid wood. You stand the risk of breaking them. Also make sure your grain is going up and down not cross ways.
