I have found a source for cherry and black walnut. A friend who made cabinets at one time said he has a barn full of boards and he will be happy to keep me supplied. It is from trees they cut and took to a sawmill.
The boards are 3/4 inch. He has a band saw and planer and will cut to the size I need.
Since I am new at this I want to ask what would be the best sizes to cut and is this wood appropriate for the projects I have in mind.
I would like to:
1. Make some bowls.
2. Make some scripture plaques for lettering.
3. Make Christmas Ornaments.
4. Do Names.
5. Do some portraits.
Thank You for your help. I am going Saturday morning for my first supply.

Hey Ron, sounds like you've got it made! I love cherry and walnut.
As for thickness's of the woods you'll need, I haven't done any bowels so I can't help you there.
For lettering depending on size you will need 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4".
For ornaments you will need 1/8" and 1/4".
For names I would use 3/4".
As for portraits, I would not use hardwoods. I would stay with a high quality plywood like Baltic birch.
Make sure that barn wood is dry. It needs to be in the 8 to 12% moisture range or things will crack when it does dry. So be careful.

Jackpot!!! I use 3/4 for bowls and spiral baskets. Ornaments will need 1/8 to 1/4 and I would have a supply of 1/2 for misc projects.

Hey! Since I replied first, I'm first in line!! >:( >:(

I am told there are stacks and stacks of boards about 8 inches wide and about 13 feet long. There are also lots of cutoffs. I feel like I am going to see Santa.
