Post by: trippin on March 07, 2016, 08:33:47 pm
My name is Bill Goodwin I go by the name trippin. I am 73 Male retired. I have wanted to try scroll work for A long time and now I am going to do it. I did try this once before and gave up to soon. I have ordered A Porta Gable from lowe's and will get it soon. I plan on using spiral blades fr the ease of the cuts. I truly look forward to being part of the Family. Trippin

G'Day Trippin, and welcome to IAP. That should be Welcome to Scroll saw workshop.

When you get old, you get things mixed up.

Dave.

Hi Bill and welcome to the forum.  I'm Julie from Texas.  Glad to have you.  Although some people cut exclusively with spirals there are others that can never get the hang of them.  I use them for portraits and when the piece I'm cutting is too big for my saw's throat.  Good luck.

Hi... and welcome.  I use nothing but spiral blades, because that is how I started out.  ;D

Welcome to the forum

I will look forward to see how the Porter Cable works out.  Dewalts and Excalibur are really getting pricey.

Welcome Trippen, I am Jim from Texas and started with a porter cable myself that santa brought me in Dec last year..

I tried spirals, they got away from me, if that happens to you, do not let it get to you, get some flat blades to learn with.

the PC machine takes pinned or pinless blades, and what surprised me was that when I ordered some flying dutchman blades there was an immediate improvement over the blades I got from Lowes and Home Depot.  Flying Dutchman and Olsen seem to be the preferred blades.

Welcome from another Texan.  I tried spiral blades at first but found that they leave a horrible edge.  I was making toys and had to sand every edge to get it smooth.  I switched to plain blades and the cut when using them is better than  a cut after it is sanded.   Spiral blades may work well for fretwork where the cut surface does not have to be smooth but all other ways to use a scroll saw do require a smooth cut.
I suggest you try doing different things with your saw including : Fretwork, Inlay, Compound cutting, toy making, lettering, intarsia, bowl making, basket making and segmentation.
