Hey guys, a quick question. Could I make trivets out of the maple that home Depot and Lowe's carries.? Thanks for the help

Personally, I prefer rough sawn lumber, but, if you don't have access to such, there's no reason the maple purchased from either place won't do the job. The main concern is to keep your trivets equal thickness. I would hesitate to get anything less than 5/8" thickness simply because of heat distribution.

You can use any kind of wood from any source that is easiest for you.
After all, all a trivet does is keep a hot dish from scorching the table cloth or the wood top of a table.
I would try to use 1/2" or thicker wood but the real important thing in cutting a trivet is a good design so that it will be used regularly. :)

I prefer to make trivets 5/8" as that is an easier thickness to cut in hard wood and still thick enough to protect the table. The only problem so far is that no one will use them as trivets but they wind up hung on the wall.
