Title: Benefits of probiotics?
Post by: Danny on September 29, 2015, 06:53:00 pm
Read a article in my AARP mag. about Probiotics.  Does anyone out there use this supplement?
The read up sounds pretty good.  Need more info.    Danny  :+}

With all the bad stuff in our American diets, killing off all the good stuff in our digestion system has required probiotic supplements. It becomes more necessary when one has been prescribed an Antibiotic to kill an infection.  The prescribed Antibiotic kills off the beneficial  as well as the bad stuff. Upping ones probiotic intake speeds the bodies return to a correct natural balance. It's also something our older bodies need to maintain a better digestion system.

Don't think there is any reason not to take them (yogurt tastes good) but I also don't think they do a lot of good.  Compared to the number of bacteria (100 trillion) already in the intestines, the amount of bacteria in yogurt or pills is very small.  Some diseases can benefit from a bacterial infusion, C Difficile is one, but you need to get a lot of bacteria to be really effective.

Antibiotics can upset the normal gut bacteria balance and probiotics might help there.

One bacterial transfer that is effective with C. Difficile is a fecal bacterial transplant.  Yup, there is a certain "iiccckk" factor but it does work.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fecal_bacteriotherapy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fecal_bacteriotherapy)

Don't want to start a debate, to each his own.
