Bob,

I have made them in the past and I have used those rare earth magnets that are good and strong.  I made a purchase of a couple hundred 1/8 in magnets so I put 6 in each of my fridge magnets, I have bigger magnets now so I only use 2.  Some folks use that vinyl magnetic tape however I have not found it to be very strong holding things.  With the rare earth magnets you can drill a hole for the magnet to be glued into.  I got my magnets from Ebay.

I've made them but it was on a lathe.... Suggest the rare earth magnets.  They are strong.

I agree with using rare earth magnets.

You can purchase strips of magnetic material that you cut to your desired length or
packs of round magnets very cheaply at places like Hobby Lobby.

I disagree with the need for rare earth magnets on just a fridge ornament.
You don't have to pick up the refridgerator with it! LOL

Just my honest opinion.

I have used magnetic printing material similar to this,

and its plenty strong or you could buy the packets of A4 magnetic printable sheets.

The thing with the magnetic tape / sheets is that they add thickness to the magnet.  With the rare earth magnets they are flush with the back of the magnet and are plenty strong enough to hold a lot of different things under the magnet at the same time...seldom will the magnetic tape / sheet be strong enough for that.  I seldom put just one thing under the magnet that is why I prefer the much stronger rare earth ones.  You can get 100 1/4 inch rare earth magnets for $6.99 free shipping... on ebay... can't beat that with the magnetic sheeting

I sell a lot of refrigerator magnets. I get mine on line from Wal-Mart. I have tried the ones at Hobby Lobby but they were not strong enough.
They are round and about 5/8" dia.
