A grandniece came up to me at our St. Patrick's Day party and asked me to make her a box with a butterfly on it. This one is cut from 3/4" red cedar, resawn to 3/8" thick. The box is 2Hx4Wx10L. I got to try out my new P-C box joint fixture. It's a great tool, if maybe a little over-the-top for this work. I've done other box joints on the scroll saw, but this jig makes them tighter and more uniform.
The butterfly is a reduced-sized version of Steve's butterfly shadow design, cut from 1/2" thick Bullet Wood. It took 4 FDUR#5 blades to get through it - the wood is super tough and heavy, but has a red glow where it is cut, and a darker surface where it's been exposed a while.
The lid and bottom are rabbited to fit on the box and the lid has small neodymium magnets on each side to hold it in place.

Ray, it's easy to see the love that went in to this project. The box joints turned out very nice. Your skill level definately shows in the butterfly. I'll bet the keepsakes that she puts in her new box will pale in comparison to the joy she feels every time she looks at her box that you made for her.
