This is my second intricate cut out on my new saw. I think I'm getting used to it, I don't know how to say it but a lot of the cut-off pieces were still intact...I could kinda follow the line completely no matter what kind of turn it had. I just stained a piece of birch plywood and glued it behind as a backer.

You hit that one out of the ball park!! Very nice cutting.
I would suggest giving spiral blades a try for intricate work like that. My favorite is Mike's Flying Dutchman 3/0 New Spiral Blade. Not everyone likes spiral blades, but that is what I use 90% of the time and it has really improved my scrolling. Well worth a try.
