Title: Jezus Plaque
Post by: Marcellarius on January 11, 2015, 03:01:25 pm
Made a Jezus plaque. (Jesus in Dutch).
I did see the great projects here and made a pattern in Dutch.
Now I have a question, should I use a backer or not?
And is I do, what's best, 1/8 ply or cardboard?
or maybe no backer, just as it is?
made from 1/2 cherry wood, "16"long.
needs a finish, thinking on using Danish oil.

Wonderful pattern and cutting Marcel!

Regarding the back - Two options I'm considering is 1) routing out the back of the project just around the letters and then putting in a 1/8 (or so) back or 2) making the plaque an overlay on top of a 1/4" backer, but making it 1/4" to 1/2" bigger than the plaque.  I would use the same shape as the plaque or perhaps an oval.  Since the backs I would make would be different color wood, I also didn't want it the same exact shape as the plaque.

Marcel that came out fantastic.  I like the plaque translated to Dutch like that.  Great work.  Thanks for sharing this with us.  As for your question about a backer the ones I have made I have not done a backer for.  I gave one to my Mother for Christmas and she has it standing proudly in her hutch.  It looks good without a backer in my opinion however the choice is yours.:)

No backer. It looks fantastic just the way it is. I have made several plaques similar to this in English and they looked/sold great with no backer. I also think it will look great with Danish oil.   :)

I think that looks great Marcel.  I love these types of patterns.  When I did one I did not put a backer on but I also wanted it to be a free standing one to put on a shelf.

Hi Marcel:
Looks good the way it is
Sometimes by adding a backer it makes it easier to read
I would not use cardboard
This is not the case with this one so I would leave it as is
Danish oil is a good option also
Thanks for showing us

Marcel,
The plaque will remain beautiful regardless of whether you choose to use a backer or not. You did an excellent job and it will look outstanding no matter how it is displayed.

Marcel - you fine lettering is remarkable. Thanks for sharing this.

We have a store here called Hobby Lobby. They sell a thin (2 mm and 3 mm) foam board in different colors, including black. It makes a nice backer and does not seem to fade (black cardstock will fade to gray over time). It's called "2mm EVA Black Foam" and a 12"x18" sells for $0.89.
