A shop owner/client asked about a passive amp for his iPhone. He likes to watch Netflix movies between customers. I made a variation on Steve's passive amp, then kept iterating with suggestions from the buyer. These are the current design in Bulletwood, Red Oak, and Black Walnut. The base is cut to a 30 degree angle so the phone screen and sound hole face square to a person sitting in a chair in front of a desk. The phone shown is my Droid. It's speakers are to the rear rather than bottom as in the iPhone, but it works great as well.
These are made in 3 layers, with a 3/4" thick solid back, the center 3/4" thick with a 2.5" sound cavity and sound path cut on the scroll saw, and the front 1/4" thick with a 1.625" sound hole cut with a Forstner Bit. They are glued together, then the 30 deg angle wedge is cut from the bottom and glued to the back for stability. Finished with Howard's Feed N Wax. Overall is 3.5"H x 8"W x about 3" deep.
BTW - the Droid is showing Glenn Close in "Damages" - she's one scary woman.

Ray those came out great. How loud can they get?

DW - I don't have a sound level meter, but there is a noticeable increase in volume - it comes from turning the sound to come straight toward you. The sound hole concentrates it some so it is maybe 2 to 3 time as loud as if the phone was sitting on the desk.
The 30 degree base angle points the sound hole and the screen right about into your face if you're sitting in front of it, so it also helps when pushing buttons on the phone. The Droid has its charger port in the bottom so it sticks out the right side of the amp - easy to connect the charger. The iPhone has its charger port between the speakers - my client says he connects the charger through the sound port and it doesn't interfere with the sound. The weight depends on the wood - Bulletwood is so dense it will sink in water - so depending on the wood it can help hold it steady. The oak model weighs just under 15 oz. I have not put any rubber feet on yet but I may try that.
