Title: Praying Hands Rev.2 - to stack or resaw, that is the question

Praying Hands, 3.5" tall ornaments, 1/4" cherry.

Most people who commented on the last posting (including at home) preferred the thinner (FDUR#9) veining in these hands, and suggested orienting the grain to follow the fingers. But when I went out to the shop, I did not have enough 1/4" oak to make another set. I looked around and found a small piece of 1" thick cherry.

I was going to resaw the cherry to make the 1/4" blanks, but then realized I'd just be stacking the pieces together to cut the hands. Stacking this type of cut is a problem because cutting around the outside will cut the tape holding the stack together, so why not cut the hands first? With the pattern on the full 1" cherry, using the FDUR#9, I cut the pattern, then used the band saw to resaw the thick hand into 4 thin ornaments. The cherry burns easily, and after resaw these looked like hands that had been tarred-and-feathered. The belt sander took the surface back to flat, and a strip of stiff paper was used to clean the dust out of the veins.

I was happy with the results - the wood is beautiful, flat and hard, with a slight hint of grain. I may go back and try the oak with the grain oriented along the fingers, but these will do for now.

That is a smart way to do that.  You realize of course that the finished dimension of the resawn cherry will be a smidgen smaller than 1/4.  Those are looking great.  Thanks for sharing the resaw tip and your work with us.

Nicely done.  I have on a couple of occasions cut a project and then re-sawed the finished project on the band saw and you are correct it works quite well.

Thanks EIEIO
Do you think bee wax do the same job!

Feed N Wax is bees wax mixed with orange oil. It squeezes out of a bottle and smells good. I think you could use BLO and plain bees wax. It might be harder to apply, but I bet it would look as good. Probably paste wax like Johnson's could also be used, but might take more work to clean out the veining (they would get clogged).

They all look great, Ray,
Thanks for explaining your process.
When I want to stack cut projects like that, even though I cut
through the tape, after I have cut partially around the perimeter I just
re-tape that area and continue on.
God Bless! Spirithorse

100% Better.    Do you get a lot of the Howard products Ray?  I was at a wood show today and was looking over the Howards site.  When I did antique furniture restoration I used a lot of Howards products.

For food grade pieces like the baguette boards or baskets I use Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner. Feed N Wax is not strictly controlled for food grade, but it works great for most other projects. I have not used other Howard's products. For BB Ply portraits I usually use 2 coats of lacquer then steel wool and Johnson's paste wax.

I have often thought of cutting one piece into several after scroll sawing the pattern but I'm to chicken. I thought I'd chip out the bottom as I resawed the larger 3/4 - 1" piece.  I kind-of see where cherry might turn out better than Oak.  If you do try it with Oak, I'd be interested in the results. Great job Ray, and great wood choice.
Nice "out of the box" way of working with the bandsaw.
Did tried it once but small parts did break of.. :(
but you master it!

I have tried this with lettering but found my letters too fragile to survive a resaw.  I now stack cut them.  I do not do fretwork but I would guess that they would have the same limitation.  Yours worked out great!
