Title: The Toucan Wooden Clock
Post by: Ray on August 02, 2014, 10:56:20 pm: Finally finished my clock project that I started over the winter. The clock is completely built from scratch. It's made entirely out of wood except for brass rods and tubes uses as shafts and axles and a hand wound magnet and sensing coil, wound with 400 feet of magnet wire.

Plans and blueprints were designed by Clayton Boyer.

Most of the gears are Baltic Birch plywood for stability, but a couple of the small pinions are padauk. The rest of the frame and base are walnut except for a thin top layer on the base that was made from Koa. It covers the magnetic coil and has to be thin. The hands are rosewood.

It's been keeping decent time so far, but I need to tweak the adjustments. It's been running a little fast by about two minutes per hour. The speed can be adjusted by moving the weighted bob and/or adding or removing lead shot.

I don't really expect it to be perfectly reliable over the long hall though. Being made of wood it's going to be susceptible to temperature and humidity I would think.

I wonder if tying the electromagnet to the power system 60 Hz (count down 60 or 120 cycles then pulse the magnet) would force the clock to stay synched. That would hold you within a second or two per month.
