Started this last night and finished this A.M.. I didn't have any flat black for the back ground which I think would look better. It is not glued on yet so next time I go to town I will pick some up. I may also cut a larger version in the near future and leave room at the bottom for his name "Alex". But, what a great pattern. Thanks again, Dave.

Nice pattern and cutting. If you have a Hobby Lobby in town, they sell a 2mm thick foam sheet that is a nice flat black and can be glued to the back rather than a board. Or a few other colors if you prefer.

I ended up using paper. Found an old photo album that had not been used and the flat black paper looked good. I like i better than the glossy. I'm wondering, if you frame this do you put glass over then to keep the dust out?

Good job! Glass or no glass, that is the question. It has been discussed here many times. I use glass. If is a piece I am giving to someone special or keeping for my own use, I use an anti-reflective glass. It also helps block the UV rays. The primary reason to use glass is to keep out the dust. If you use a paper backer, it can fade in the sunlight. Your wood can also yellow in the sun. A lot of people use paper as a backer, I don't. It is a mater of personal preference.

Very nice job, looks great, thanks for sharing.

IMHO - a scrolled portrait begs you to touch it. If it's covered in glass then it's like a printed pattern. I'd leave the glass off.

well that turned out OK
the card does look better the the painted backer
as far as glass goes "all the time for me" as Ray says they are begging to be touched thus they can get broken

You did a great job. I use the glass if I use a bought frame. It depends on the individual I think.
