These two younguns will be married in June. We've know Crystal since 6th grade science fair. The portrait is 8"x10", 1/4" BB Ply. Frame is cut from 1" Birch. The backing is 2mm dark brown foam sheet the covered over with 1/8" BB Ply. The back strips are 1/8" red oak. The corner splines are 1/8" Black Walnut.

Great work, Ray!
Excellent cutting and fantastic frame but, I do have a question.
Why did you elect to use the slats on the back rather than home-made
turn buttons (examples of turn buttons here) http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=turn+buttons+with+screws&tag=mh0b-20&index=aps&hvadid=3527451417&ref=pd_sl_4v6qyn9lpq_bb
I'm just curious.
Thanks for sharing your work and thanks for giving me some insight
into your thought process on the frame.
God Bless! Spirithorse

Spirithorse - IMHO The slats are easier to make than turn-buttons - just a strip with 2 screws in it. There's no real reason to open the back once the portrait is in it unless you want to use the frame for something else, so then you remove the screws. I guess for a store-bought frame you expect to open/close it at least once (to put your photo in) so the turn buttons are easier, but this one may never be opened (unless they hate the portrait but like the frame!)
In addition - you can't see it in the photo, but on the top slat, the bottom edge is beveled up and in - like a French Cleat - so it will hang on a nail or screw head on the wall. You don't need to add a hanger.
This frame is also fairly thick and with a square bottom edge, so it sits upright on a shelf w/o needing a leg. So you can hang it or just sit it on a shelf.
Make sense?

That looks great Ray. Congratulations to the happy couple.
