Title: Hickory Wood
Post by: troy_curtis on May 17, 2014, 11:09:15 pm
Okay, so I went to the Woodworkers Source and as usual I went through some of the scrap wood bin. Found some Hickory. The sales person told me that Hickory is too hard to cut on a scroll saw. Well, it is hard, but not by any means too hard. Here is a small cross I made showing both side.

That's a good looking cross and a terrific piece of wood.

Lots of folks under estimate what a scroll saw can cut.  That cross looks great.  Hickory is indeed hard on tools though.  Cutting much of it will definitely dull just about any blade very quickly.  Thanks for sharing this with us.

I would go back to the shop and take the cross with you and show him what can be done with a scroll saw and some Hickory.  He would be gobsmaked.  ;)  Looks great Troy oh by the way I LOVE the wood.

GOOD JOB!!
I told you that you could do it.  ;)  Never let anyone tell you that you can't do something or tell you the "right" way to do something.
You can do anything you want to if you just try. And there is no right way to do anything. there just different ways of doing things.
I have had a few occasions that someone told me that "You can't do it that way." and I've responded with "Gosh! I wish you had told me that before I did it!"

Case in point...
"You can't make anything out of plywood look good." and "You can't make a vase with a scrollsaw."
Gee I wish I had known that before I made this.....

Thanks, and yes, that is amazing looking project from plywood. Appreciate all the good comments. Looking forward to my next Hickory project...not sure what to make, but I have some more wood to use.

That's a great looking cross, and the wood has a gorgeous pattern to it.
