Title: Wooden mugs
Post by: Nbmartin on February 16, 2014, 02:36:56 pm
New member from IL. Not sure how to post things yet, but I'll try a question. I like making wooden mugs, but not sure how to flatten a spot on the rings without doing all of them. Any help would be nice. Also, why doesn't Dewalt come with a lifting arm? Tired of hen pecking, gotta go.

Thanks

First up welcome, next as for the rings with a flat spot (for the handle I assume) either file/sand by hand or flatten the rings concerned before glueing.

I'm not sure why you want a flat spot on a mug either but, if it is for a handle, I find it easier to sand and/or file a curve in the handle. I wrap sandpaper around a dowel or use a half round file and work it a little at a time until I can get a proper curve in the handle ends. Actually, depending on how tight the curve is in the mug, it doesn't have to be all that close.
That is how I made the handle on this pitcher. (note the the curvature changes from the top to the bottom)

I agree with Roger, instead of flattening the ring make a curve in the handle. You can wrap sandpaper around the mug and use that to sand the perfect curve for the handle to fit the mug. If you make a lot of these mugs, you can speed things up by making a jig out of a ring, add sandpaper and attach to the drill press with an arbor.

Thanks to those who replied about the flat spot on the mug. The directions from Steve Good was to flatten the rings of the mug after glue up. I agree with the replies and curved the handle instead. It was a hit and miss if I got it right. I loved the suggestions and will try them. Hope this is the right way to reply.

Thanks
