Title: Pattern Help Please
Post by: mowerman1193 on September 21, 2013, 04:03:40 pm
This is my aunt and uncle, My aunt was murdered a couple years ago. My uncle has done a lot for me over the years and I wanted to make him something special. I would like this picture into a pattern and also inside this clock. My plan is to try to cut the pattern out in a nice piece of either maple or Oak and then inlay the inner part of the clock ( portrait part ) while the outer part would be made of probably walnut. Also would help if someone could tell me what a great starting point would be on the angle needed to inlay this project. Would be cutting it 1/2" most likely with a #5 Flying dutchman ultra reverse. These are the best photos I have. The one I have already removed most of the background. The other pictures are my poor try at making this myself..I sure wish I could do it on my own but I just cannot get it to look right.
Thanks for anyone that would give this a shot for me..Oh yeah probably like a size of around 14 x 14 ish or maybe a little larger something close my saw only has a 18" throat but my issue is more about finding a wide enough board that can go through my 13" planer..suppose it could be cut in pieces too and glued together might be hard with doing inlay with it though..Like as big as I can though..

Sorry to hear about your Aunt. Please post a bigger picture so that one of us can attempt making a pattern .

No help for this one huh? That is the only photo I have of the two of them together. I was the one that put the slide show together at the funeral so I have a lot of photos..just non with them together that is even close to being workable.

Thanks anyway,
Kevin

See how this looks.

For 1/2 inlay using a #5 (0.015" thick), the angle should be close to:
  angle = arcsin(blade/wood) = arcsin(0.015/0.500) = 1.7 degrees.
The pilot hole (1/32" bit will be too small - try 3/64" or a #63 or larger bit) should be drilled so you are filling the darker of the two woods after assembly. If you want the insert to be proud, and if inserting from the top, then increase the angle a bit.

This is great!! Thank you very much for taking the time to do this for me. Hoping to get this cut so I can give it to him around November as she was murdered on the 8th.

Thanks again,
Kevin

Mower - I don't think the previous had any floaters, but I added some bridges to help with some dangling peninsulas in that version. Give this a try.

Thank you again!! I printed this last one off and am now searching for the right board to cut this on. I will post a photo when I get it cut out.

Thank you again,
Kevin

Well I decided not to inlay it or make it into a clock. Cut it out of a nice piece of spalted maple. About 3/4" thick 13" tall 11 wide. Not too sure I like the grain on portraits..I normally do portraits out of BB ply..

Anyway here is the finish project, and again thanks for the pattern help..

That's a beautiful piece of wood, and the cutting is excellent. It has a smokey (ghostly?) look with the strong wood grain behind the portrait.

Thanks for posting the photo.

Kevin you did a great job on the cutting and the piece of wood you chose is lovely.  Great pattern Ray.
