Post by: Danny on August 25, 2013, 10:04:36 am
Got the IDEA for this years craft show to construct a SMALL type bird house of various designs.

Is there anyone that has built this?  Was thinking the size around 3 to 4 inches in height.
Guess the type that are on the Simple side.

Any help would be Appreciated.

Thanks to All In Advance..................................Danny  :+}

Danny - if you can get access to that cedar project board I posted

it would be a great material for tiny bird houses. You might look around in flea markets near you. They sell 100 blanks about 3" x 7" x 3/16" for $3.75.

Danny, I made this one a few years ago. I had some cedar scrap I didn't want to burn. Nothing fancy, but I use it on my desk to hold spare memory cards.It's about 2-1/2" x 3" and 3-1/2" high. Sorry for the lousy pictures but I don't have my usual set up right now.

hey Danny,
Think that's a great Idea.
Did you see the topic of DWsudekum (http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=7152.15)?

on that site he has a link with  some patterns  (http://www.scrollsawinspirations.com/default.asp?ID=7&action=detail&ProductCode=131)for sale

scrollsawer has a topic on small birdhouses (http://www.scrollsawer.com/forum/scroll-saw-business-side/42724.htm),

here they are called fairy houses/village (https://www.lilblueboo.com/2011/06/a-mini-birdhouse-fairy-village-a-tutorial.html), so more the enough idea's.

on Google I saw a lot of little lathe turned birdhouses as well

I hope this helped.

Several years ago, I made some small bird houses and used aluminum flashing for a tin roof.  One lady applied small stones and made a cute stone cottage.

Thanks be it to each one....  Compound cut is to small, but I shall do some.  Still need some patterns tho.
Smaller regular type houses construction will be simple.  Think the paint job and a couple decals will sell um.

Thanks again....  Danny  :+}

Danny - I've seen some birdhouses that use a bent license plate as the roof. Those are full-sized.

What about cutting up an aluminum beer can to make the roof? The label might attract buyers.

Or how about just using the empty beer can on its side and compound-cutting a tiny bird to sit on it near the pop-top opening?

I saw an alcohol camp stove made by cutting a can in half then shoving the halves together to make a short version of the can. On its side, it would be about the right proportions for a fairy birdhouse.

Here's a pattern you might be able to adapt to your needs. I did cut this on the scroll saw to make sure everything looked proportional. I'd suggest for straighter lines and to make them faster, cut them on a table saw. I put the sizes on the pattern with the assumption that you use 1/4" stock. Make any adjustments for thinner wood.

Hope this helps.

If you make the roof removable, it makes a nice box. Add a chimney and you can market it as an incense box. Add a coin slot in the roof for a small bank. Lots of things you can do with it.
