Title: Mini Box
Post by: Des804 on August 05, 2013, 09:31:07 am
Small box I made using another of Steve Goode's Patterns. Its 1/4 plywood and 3/8 washboard. I havent finished this cause its a gift and Im waiting for someone to tell me what to finish it in. I didnt cut the pieces straight ( still working on that ) so it opens up more on one end then the other so I added a little nob piece they can use to tell which piece to pull.

Looks good.  Contrary to popular fiction cutting straight lines and circles are difficult.  The box looks good.  If you want the color slightly darker seal the box with tung oil and then top coat it with either shellac or lacquer.

I've got to make a trip to Lowes and look for that "Washboard". Your box looks good.

I've been messing with finger jointed boxes again and I found a nice way to make random finger joints. The results seem to be pretty good and they are fast to cut.

looking good. finish is personal  depending on what you like.
I would give it a BLO/spirit  (mixture 50/50) finish.
3 or 4 layers and a good buff.
if you put some orange oil in the mixture the smell is great and for me it's a complete finish.

or 1 BLO layer and a clear lacquer.

my bowl was just a BLO Finish and then buffed. I've also done other things in that. The person who the box is going to is a friend of another person I know and that person is supposed to be figuring out what kind of finish they want. May I ask why you mix the BLO ?

BLO by itself will take days to dry. The 50/50 mix of BLO and mineral spirits will dry in 24 hrs and penetrates the wood better.

just like Raymond said:
It will penetrate deeper in the wood and it dries quicker.

That looks great.  Is this the first box that you have made?
