Title: Need advice concerning BASSWOOD.... :+}
Post by: Danny on June 21, 2013, 04:25:44 pm
Hello to All....  Ran across a 1/2" slice from I guess a TREE.  Had the bark still
                      intact (altho some of it has fell off)  Price wasn't bad, so bought it.
Question....Has anyone cut this for any type of craft?  If so could you say any
                 Pros or Cons about it.  Have a idea of another Bible verse.
Oh yea....  Its in my Subject line, but the wood was labeled ....BASSWOOD....

I have done three or four using spirals...very soft, cuts easy, ADD a backer piece!
Sawdust is total powder!

Finished with the 50/50 and spray lacquer.

Take a look in the gallery...

Thank You GB....  Gonna cut the same as I showed already.  Joshua 25:15.  Do
you feel it will cut the script letters....Wonderfully?  Fine dust doesn't sound good.
            Oh well like the ole saying goes....Live n Learn..............Danny  :+}

Danny, I use Basswood occasionally when I need a white color in an Intarsia.

I think a lot of people use Basswood when whittling/carving.

Hi Dan, I have cut a number of pieces out of the basswood blanks. It's very soft easy cutting but you do get a lot of sawdust and the back edges are rough.

I used it a couple of times. I also used it in a video too.

Basswood is used a lot for carving because of its even grain and relative softness.  It holds detail well as a carving (I've never tried sawing it with any detail).  It sands well enough but you can scratch the heck out of it with the coarser grits due to the softness of the wood.

I give a BIG THANKS to all for their input.  This was only by accident of seeing this
wood blank at Michael s.  Didn't go in to buy it....but....DID....

GB....Was planning on adding a 1/8 backer.  Think its time to get out there and
         start making sawdust.

I REALLY LIKE what I see with the 2 projects shown.  Great looking.... Danny  :+}
