Title: Beating a dead horse?

At the risk of sounding dumb, I have a question about food-safe finishing (yes, again). I've seen several posts that talk about BLO plus Mineral Spirits to bring out the color in a piece. Then I've seen posts saying that Mineral Oil is food safe.

Is BLO a mineral oil?
Is the BLO+MS followed by wax a food-safe finish?
How about BLO+MS followed by lacquer?
How about BLO+MS followed by shellac?

I've heard on this site that hard finishes like lacquer, shellac, or urethane are food-safe once they have lost their odor, but if you dig your fork into the salad bowl and scratch that hard surface, will the underlying BLO+MS be any issue? If so, what is an acceptable substitute?

Hey big E. the bottom line is if it is designed as a finish, it is food safe once it is cured. Boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits are food safe once cured. It may be cured and still have an odor.  Things that my not be food safe are things like lemon oil and orange oil. These are designed for cleaning and may contain ingredients that are not food safe.
It is not advisable to use a a hard finish on bowls and such because they will eventually chip and flake away as they come in contact with moisture. It is best to use a finish that is easily renewable like mineral oil with wax, or salad bowl finish.

I bet...  that if you were to go back in Time...    All wood finishes were considered to be "Food-Safe"...    If they weren't, who would complain?   email, and telephones had not yet been invented, so no one could reach you to complain....

Did you ever wonder why we can't "remember" the future just like we do the past? Einstein claimed there was really no difference (frames of reference and all that). Stephen Hawking points out that Entropy always increases moving toward the future so there's a hint there.

I suppose if people were able to remember their future, they might see what their lfe with kids would look like and decide to become DINKs (dual income, no kids). Then the people with the strongest gene for future memory would breed themselves out of the pool, and eventually only past-rememberers would be having kids. Hey - maybe...

Isn't it just the conditions during manufacturing and packaging that determine labeling?

BLO is made from flax..and I'm sure no one has died from flax.... unless it was made into rope and you were hung with it...  ;D

Personally, I worry more about the wood than the "food safe" issue.
I suppose that if you ding the wooden bowl or whatever hard enough it could produce a splinter. Not only would it ruin the item but, I doubt that a splinter in your mashed potatoes would be considered "food safe" either.
Yes, as a baby, my crib was painted with LEAD based paint (can you tell?) but, until I got teeth, I doubt that I ingested any of it.  ::)

The finish may be safe, but some woods like walnut can be toxic.

Marcel - thanks. I checked the site but IKEA does not sell those on-line here. I will look for them if I get to a store. I think there is one near here but I've never been to it.
