Hey everybody, a while back I had posted something in reply to scrolling about my Delta being a major piece of junk and that I had, had to jerry rig it several times in just a few months....well, I had to do that again tonight and it lasted like 15 minutes....I've had it with this saw! I am well past the armature stage of scrolling and I'm willing to spend 5-6 hundred bucks on a saw. Considering the Dewalt 20".....any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I would go with the 21" Excalibur. You will not be disappointed. I had the DW for over ten years and I thought it was great but the ones now aren't made the same. When I needed to replace it, I went with the Excalibur and my scrolling is at a whole new level. Get one from Ray at Seyco (www.seyco.com) and you won't be sorry. He will make sure you are happy and you will LOVE your new saw! :)

I can't vouch for Ray as I have had no dealings with him, but I have not heard 1 bad thing about his service. But I can vouch for the EX21, that is a fantastic machine.

I have the DW788 Type 2. I've had it for 4 yrs. with lots of use and have had no trouble with it. I haven't tried an EX-21 but I hear nothing but good things about them and the tilting head is a big plus if you are going to cut out bowls or anything else that needs angle cuts. If you can afford it, I'd suggest the EX-21.

I had a Harbor Freight scroll saw and it lasted a very short time. I bought a DeWalt it lasted a little longer (20 months). I tired of fixing it so I bought a Hegner. Still have it five years later and it runs fine. I also bought a used (1986) Hegner and it is my main saw. I found a 15" Jet on Craig's list, (1988) for $15 and I put $50 of upgrades into it and it works well. If you are doing just fretwork and seldom cut over 1/2" material a DeWalt should work OK but it is not heavy duty like the three I have are. A friend of mine has had a DeWalt about 6-7 years and has replaced the motor four times @ $400 a pop. Now it is in the shop yet again and I have loaned him my Jet saw and he loves it. He likes it because he can adjust the tension on the blade much higher than he could on the DeWalt so it cuts thick material (2x4's) much straighter. He is looking at a new Porter Cable at Lowes as a possible replacement. Many swear by DeWalt but I do not know how much they use theirs nor how thick material they are cutting. My friend and I both cut on our saw on average four hours a day seven days a week and never as thin as 1/2".

i got the EX-21 and loves it get saw.i can't for the DW saws but the people that got them don't have thing bad to say about them.

Hi Bud I'm with the excalabur lot I started out seriously with it and it is a pleaseure to use no issues with cutting on average 2-3 hrs every day.

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. I have owned a Dewalt for about six years and I am very happy with it. I plan one day to move up to an EX-21.
If you can afford it, I would go with the Excalibur (EX-21). If not the Dewalt (DW788) would be my next choice.
Sheila makes a great point. Get a saw from someone who stands behind their product. It seems Ray from Seyco, has earned a good reputation for being there when problems arise. I always try to buy the best I can afford from a quality retailer no matter what I am purchasing. Good luck.

I have an EX21, purchased from Ray @ Seyco, and love it and the service from Ray! He just does not sell a saw without fine tuning it and checking it out before the customer receives it. His after sell service is fantastic!

I bought a used saw from Ray at Seyco over 10 years ago, NO REGRETS!!! I used to use my saw about 8 hours a day - every day. I don't cut like that anymore but I know when I go out to the shop - It is going to do it's job. If it died today - I would not hesitate to buy another one ASAP.

I have a Hegner multicut SE, awesome machine, runs smooth and only 79dba noise.
18" space and good variable engine speed. easy blade change due to the quick clamp.
it's a bottom feeder, but that works well for me.
there is also the 22" multicut quick for big projects.
we don't have DeWalt in Europe...
I had a cheap Ferm FZ 40/16 before this and althoug I can't with compare Excalibur or the D Walt,
I think Hegner is one of the best saws

I want to thank everyone for their advise. I checked out seyco.com and watched Ray's demonstration and although it may take me a few extra weeks to get it I think I'm going with the EX21.

I considered the EX21. They sound like great machines, but no one has them... I talked to Ray and he said that it would be June before they expected any to come in. I couldn't go that long and bought a Dewalt 788. It's Much, Much better than my beginner saw. Maybe Excalibur with have their distribution issues ironed out the next time I'm in need of a new saw.
