This planter is 3 inches wide by 3 inches tall. Cut from walnut the polka dots are actually dowel rods that were glued into the wood before I cut it. This is the first one ... the prototype. Finished with spar varnish.

looks great, What is "spar varnish" is it like the "yacht varnish" we get over here in U.K.

As near as I can tell from quick research online they are either the same product or were similar in use. Spar Varnish was originally formulated to be used on the spars and masts of sailing ships. Since today we generally do not use wind power for ship the formulation has changed a bit and generally Spar Varnish is thought as a weather resistant outdoor varnish.
