Title: Red Spot on Stained Wood

I don't know if this is the place on the forum to discuss this. If not Mr. Moderator, please put in correct topic. I have noticed on more than one occassion that red spots appear on some stained wood. I am using Miniwax stain, dark walnut, on clear pine. After the stain dries, I see a red spot often. Is this related to the stain or the wood? I wipe the stain on with a cloth and sometimes dip the project and then wipe the excess. Hope this makes sense; don't know how else to explain what is happening. I know a customer noticed it yesterday on a cross she purchased and I had to use a marks-a lot to cover the red spot.

hey Tony i don't know what the problem is with the stain or how to fix it but can you give me more info on the "marks-a lot" to cover it up?

Sounds like a pigmentation separation in the stain ,Has it ever frozen ,I try to rotate ,top and bottom storage of my paints and stains ,helps eliminates mass settlement on finishes I use seldom ,and makes remixing easy !

Possible it is a finger or thumb print.  If you touch a piece of wood with your bare hand you can leave behind oily residue which can affect a stains performance.

Newfie, I use a black marks-a-lot on scratches sometimes when my furniture oil is not available. I just apply the marks-a-lot and then rub very gently to blend in with stained wood.

Tony,
Are you putting a coat of 1# cut shellac on the wood first? Pine is very prone to blotching when using stain but, I've never seen a RED spot before and the shellac will seal the pores to prevent blotching. It very well could be that the stain is old or not mixed very well. I can see where walnut stain would have some red dye in it that may be separating from the other stuff in the stain.
I have just about given up on stain for my projects (larger furniture items) I just can't get an even coat of stain even with shellac especially on the darker colors.  >:(

No Rog, I am not using shellac. I wish all my customers would just like natural color of the wood. I do not like to stain, but, I guess pleasing those who buy is a negative side of selling scroll work. I have just about made up my mind to sell all natural at craft shows, and stain only special orders.
