Title: Dust Collectors
Post by: Old Crow on March 04, 2013, 02:04:00 pm
I am in the market for a dust collector for my small workshop. I am thinking about the 1 HP or 1.5 HP Shop Fox http://www.amazon.com/SHOP-FOX-W1727-Dust-Collector/dp/B001R23T44
because of size and price.
I am wondering if anyone here has one of these units and if so are you satisfied with it or should I be looking elsewhere?
Thanks for any comments/advise.

I've got the Delta version of this. Works great but I upgraded the filter bag to a 1 micron filter, it came with 10 micron filters. The stock filters left real fine dust floating around the shop when it was used for any length of time.

HF has their 2hp like that on sale right now I believe for $169.00.  I have one and for the money I like it, it does the job and as mentioned a better filter could be added. )

I have heard nothing but good reports concerning the Harbor Freight dust collectors...but  they were after buying my  Grizzly 2 HP 220 Volt dust collector. Wish I had known about it before buying  this Grizzly. This Grizzly has a 2.5 micron filter bag and the fine dust gets right through it and all over my car. I have since moved and have a separate workshop in this new (to me) house and I have moved the dust collector outside the shop in a small enclosure I built for it and this is no longer an issue.  I suggest a 1 micron filter if you plan to have your equipment inside.

Only thing I wish the HF had was the ability to run on 120/240 instead of just 120. :)

Good for you Don on your decision to buy it. I still don't have a dust collection system, but maybe someday soon.

I don't have one but thought often to buy one.
did you looked into the noise levels as well?
can imagine a 1HP does less noise then the 2HP right?
so, do these things make a lot of noise?

Marcel, I put mine together yesterday and ran it for a short while. It is less noisy than my vacuum cleaner but noise isn't a problem for me because the DC is housed in a seperate building. Today I am going to run the piping for it then I will be all set to start collecting dust.
