I have a customer in Mesa, AZ (The lady who gave me the door harp idea) who was cleaning out her garage and had this item set in her driveway ready to go to the dump. She said she couldnt find anyone who wanted it and asked if I wanted it. We have a small end table that has been ready for the trash for many many years. Well, I took this treasure home and put a cloth over it until Christmas day. My wife loved it. Tomorrow we will be hauling the old table out the door and giving it a proper home in the trash.

In our neighbourhood, instead of putting things out for the trash, many people put them at the end of the driveway. Most times, someone takes them home. I have put out upholstered chairs and a 50" projection TV (working), among other things. It's a good way to keep things out of the dump.
In addition, there are a number of organizations such as the Salvation Army, that collect clothes, electronics, furniture, etc., etc. and resells them for their charitable works. Much of my stuff goes there as well.
We even have people who drive around collecting scrap metal. An old stove doesn't last long when these guys come by.

We do the same thing in these parts. Recently I was driving and I saw a man moving an old wooden bed framed to the end of his driveway. So I had to stop and have a look. He was cleaning out an old house and didn't know what else to do as he had a limited time frame to get it done. I took all the wooden pieces that were there, some nice bed posts that can be recut. In a nother few months when people are spring cleaning I will be able to fill my barn with good stuff. One time I picked up 2 pieces of new oak handrail about 8 ft long each. Some people do not know the value of this stuff, they don't go to the store to buy it themselves, that is all done by the contractors.

The end table I want to throw out is a very cheap particle board table. I think I got it originally at sears for like $20. I have had it for about 25 years and it has scrapes and a chunk missing from the top. It has become a horrible eyesore, but I held on to it because it was still practical to hold our photo albums. So it is so bad a piece the best thing for it is to let it go. The wood is of no quality to make anything with. I do, however, find lots of wood this way.

Yes, and I am too cheap to buy new furniture. That is why we kept it for so long. Well, this new end table was a pleasant surprise for my wife and it was free! How good is that? (dont think I am cheap for all things, just when it comes to buying furniture)

LOL, I know exactly how you feel. I have gotten some of my best stuff dumpster diving, neighbor throw away or the local charity shops. I even have a 100 year old lamp that still works...... ;D ;D ;D
