Title: First big scroll
Post by: dirtrider73068 on December 20, 2012, 09:13:43 pm
I cut a cross out for my wife, its about a foot tall, took about 5 1/2 hours to do, I was pleased with how it turned out.

Thanks guys it was pain staking working sitting there for so long I would have to stop and get or stand for a bit. The wood I cut it out of is Luan, its pretty cheap about 5 bucks for a 2x2 sheet think its 1/4 it has a dark side and light side. If cut the dark side the lighter side veneer likes to splinter and peel off. So one I get my patter glued down I peel off the lighter veneer sand the back smooth. I am sure you could also flip it over and cut out a lighter pattern, But I like the dark shade plus it shows some lines looks like wood grain and can move the pattern to get the lines to show a certain way.

I would like to do some more better work with some better wood like some baltic birch once I get some.

Looks very nice!!!  You can get Baltic Birch at Michaels Craft store.  12" x 24" about $8.00.  Expensive, but it is a source that you have probably near you.  Check their website for coupons, I just used a 50% off any one item the other day.

Good job!

I wondered if that stuff at micheals was baltic birch its cheaper there than at hobby lobby. Might have to get a piece of it to try see how it cuts. This scrolling is addictive if you like wood work, I am loving it, think I found a good hobby I can enjoy and have fun with, if the weather will work with me. Its been cold all day.

Great work! I get my BB Ply from Lowes. It comes in big or small sheets. I just cut it down in my shop with the table saw or you can have them cut it down there.

Unless your Lowes is different than mine that "Birch" plywood is NOT Baltic Birch and does not have the same qualities as BB. It also has been known to have voids in the inner plies.

Yes it did take some work the leaves ends where they are pointed took alot of the time, I cut the extra out then went back in two different directions to get the small points of each leaf to add the detail of a zig zag on the edge of the leaf.

great job!

I know I can get carried away and cut for hours on end. I do get up and take a stroll around the basement for my neck and eyes sake. This is a great hobby though, so have fun

I buy mine at Lowes too. Get the 2x4 sheet and have them cut into 1ft squares. Good for stack cutting or just single sheet projects.
