Title: Magnifying lamp
Post by: don in brooklin on on November 26, 2012, 08:40:55 am
I am looking for a lamp for my scroll saw and the local Busy Bee has the free standing, 90 light LED with 3x magnifying lamp on sale.

My question is should I get the free standing one or the one that clamps on. They are both the same price.

Thanks

Don't know what saw you have, but, I have the magnifyer and lamp that are separately attached to the saw. They are sold by Seyco. Sometimes I need the light only and can move it to any position near the blade.

Don, unless you have an extremely vibration free saw, then I would opt for the free standing one. Mine is a desk model and I have it setting on a bar stool that is setting next to my saw so it can be moved around.

I have a clamp on light but it is not clamped to my saw.  It is attacjed to a frame of 2X4 behind the saws so I can swing it between the saws.  :)

This is the one I purchased from Harbor Freight  Magnifying Lamp (http://www.harborfreight.com/fluorescent-magnifying-lamp-66384.html)  three years ago. Never had a problem with it and it has the original bulb.  8)

Make sure it has a glass lens so you can clean it & not worry about scratching it.
Just my say.

Russ That light looks very similar to one I saw somewhere that sells for well over $100. Does it have a glass lens?

I have 2 of them and one smaller LED magnifier I got at the woodworking Show last spring. I do not care for the LED light as it is not bright enough for me. I only have one good eye and it ain't perfect.  The fluorescent does a much better job for me.

it kind of looks like a lift seat for the toilet ;D.

I bought mine at menards for $37. it is not attached to my saw. it is mounted to my work bench so it will swing away from the saw when needed.

I bought the mag lite from rockler (who is not making these anymore). I had to make a stand for the light because even a little vibration makes my eyes freak out. I added casters to the stand so I can slide it out of my way when needed.

bottom line, I wouldn't attach to a bench that the saw is on

Hmmm, mine is attached to the stand and no problems. No movement at all, of course my saw doesn't vibrate.  8)

I bought a magnifier florescent lamp 2 weeks ago at an office supply store called "Staples" and just love it.  It sure makes it easier for these old eyes to follow the lines and the light is fantastic.  I don't get any glare on the piece like I was getting with the light that comes with the DW-788.  I have it attached to my workbench and so there is virtually no vibration whatsoever.

Hi Don

I have the clamp on model from Busy Bee.
It has a florescent lamp. with 3 x power lens
I have mine  clamped onto a wall to prevent vibration, and I close the cover when not in use to keep the dust off the lens.
Works great for me.

Hey Don, I have both models from Busy Bee, I tried the clamp on for the saw but had no luck finding somewhere to clamp it and have it not interfere with my cutting but that is probably due to my set up so I went with the stand alone for the saw works great the led lamp is nice and bright and I can move it and use somewhere else in the garden shed/shop.

thanks for all your input.

I went with the clamp on LED and I won't be able to test till after Christmas when Santa delivers.

Busy Bee also sell a seperate stand if the clamp doesn't work out.

Thanks again.

Don

Just one more comment if I may...

I just adore my florescent lamp/ magnifier.  As stated, I have it clamped to my workbench - no vibration whatsoever.  But best of all... I am relatively new to the hobby and still get kind of intimidated when I have a small inside cut to do.  With the magnifier it makes the piece that I'm cutting look HUGE, seeming to take away my anxiety over making the cut.  (I know... mind over matter) Also, the light is so much brighter than the lamp that comes with the DW788 and there's no glare on the piece.  I have to say that it has really helped to improve my cutting.
