Hey Jim, Some folks do specialize in one or two types of scrolling. Take Al- Intarsia92. He specializes in intarsia, but I have seen him do other types. I tend to do a lot of fretwork but I certinly don't speciaize in it. I basicly cut what ever I like. If I see a pattern I like, I cut it, from Intarsia to puzzles and baskets and whatever. I have not tried bowls because it is easier to do them on a lathe.
I do other forms of woodworking too. I have a lathe and a full woodshop, so whatever apeals to me, I can make it.

I don't even specialize in scroll saw work! :o
I do all kinds of wood working from fret work to blanket chest's. :P From 3-D scrolling to rocking chairs and burial urns. ::) I do find from time to time that my scroll saw helps out on projects that are not strictly scroll sawing. ;)
In any endeavor, keep an open mind, and don't be afraid to try anything.....At least twice. :D :D :D

great thing about this hobby, you can do a lot of diffrent things and they are all exciting. I actually started doing wood carving and then I seen Intarsia. I tried that and then I seen fretwork. Then I seen box making and now I'm interested in inlay. The more you get in to it the more projects you will find that will interest you.
Love this hobby!!!!

I agree with all the above. There are so many different things you can do with wood that the possibilities are endless. You can incorporate fretwork with a rocking chair top or intarsia with a box lid, or vise versa. I do so many things with wood and enjoy all of the things I make. Find something that you are happy making and enjoy doing. If you don?t maybe put it off to the side and come back at a later date and see if you like it then. You will find what you like and don?t like in time.
