Title: sound proofing basement workshop

Still working on my workshop in the basement. Got to thinking about trying to muffle some of the noise for the  family members upstairs. Anyone have any ideas that don't require you to rebuild the house. Will adding insulation between the joists do anything?

Gluing old carpet on the walls will also do a lot for deadening sound.

A lot depends on what tools you use.  My shop is about a quarter mile from the little store we have here in the park, but when I use the joiner or planer,  folks down there will tell me they heard me "sawing" .  I usually answer Yep, working hard today.

Almost anything added to the ceiling will help alot. Insulation will be the best and fairly easy to do, and carpet isn't bad at all, even dead air space between the joist's if you put up sheetrock or thin plywood will help some. People upstairs may not like the noise but, at least they will know where you are!  :D ;) ;D

I use 2 inch Styrofoam to deaden sound. Cheap and easy to put up with Hot/warm glue gun  or good two way foam tape for things like hanging posters.
