Hi everyone,
I am going to attempt to start the 23rd Psalm pattern that I bought several years ago. The pattern does not come with any help at all. I would appreciate any advice on how to start or any other useful tips. Also any problems anyone has had if they did this pattern. Thanks.

Sorry, enough trolling...
What size is your pattern, do you need to reduce/enlarge it have you thought about what you want to do with it once finished ? Frame Box etc.
I tend to look at patterns and see what I can do with them, how they are constructed, where are the weak points, areas that will be stressed, or need packing whilst making other cuts..
I also cheat a little and join some of the really smaller points (i.e. a cheetah/jaguar spots) I make it comfortable for me really. With Characters (Letters, you have a little leeway, but not much.
Failing that - I scan it into photoshop and make changes ;)

Bob, I don't know which pattern your going to cut, so it's hard to give advice. I've cut several of Steve Goods pattern, usually from red oak but also from maple. It's my favorite for giving to others, but it is a bit difficult. My last two were reduced to 70% in my copier and cut from a 4 X 6 piece of maple. I prefer to do them a bit larger, but a cabinet shop gave me about 100 samples they had, all the same size in 3/4". Some oak, maple, cherry, etc. and I just gotta use them! I resaw them to 1/2" for this.
When I cut I always start with the bigger pieces within the shepard, and under the sheep. From there I start cutting the letters on the right, from the bottom to the top. I leave the hook on the staff until last as it's the most delicate part. I leave all the surrounding waste until last, giving it more support. And I also sometimes leave a bridge from one letter to another where it needs a bit more support, but not always. It all takes a bit of time, but the results are rewarding. Your pattern is probably altogether different, so this may not help you at all. It would help us if you could show the pattern you plan to use.

Are you saying there aren't any instructions, or not enough information in them to guide you? A little more info might help in getting guidance.

not sure of the pattern you are going to do but for me i do the inside cuts first staring with the small ones!

I don't believe Steve has one. Not that I've ever seen. Just the lords prayer.

Betty, Steve has the 23rd Psalm pattern, but it's just entitled "Sheperd". Go to:

I looked at the one by Wildwood Designs and it's far too complex for this rank amatuer!
And yes, I also do all the inside cuts first.

Sorry I should of gave more info. It is from Wildwood Design and the pattern # is 1873. It is about 27" X 37". It is has a rounded top with the Shepard and Sheep in it. It is at least 15 years old. It did not tell me what size plywood to use or what blades would be good to use such as size. There are about a gazillion holes to drill and it is done in 8 sections and then you have to piece it together. Thanks I hope this helps. ;D

Ron, from the description on Wildwood Designs site and your description, it looks like you're cutting overlays to be placed on a contrasting backer. The site calls for 1/8" ply. That's how I'd go, cutting with the smallest reverse tooth blade you've got. I'd use either FD-R 2/0 or FD-UR #1. I'd also stack 2 layers, because you want as few fuzzies as you can get. With that much detail, cleaning up the fuzzies will be quite a chore.
