Author Topic: Cyclone Dust Vacuum - will it work? (Read 2008 times)

Hey!

I have this idea to build a dust collecting system.
I'm trying to base it on the cyclone systems. It should work like a cyclone - without making noise like a cyclone. I want it as silent as possible.

I'm using 2 extra powerful but silent computer fans, each 4.75" x 4.75". To maintain the air flow and to "align" the air I would add boards into the airbox (the part with the spelling fail

) Behind that would be the dust extractor, 2" high and width. It will have 2 sloped, extram slick boards which hopefully will cause the air to speed up and make an extrem sharp turn upwards while the dust falls into the dust box. Here I would ad a drawer for simple cleaning.

What do you think - might this work

Or am I completely wrong

Any additional thoughts?

They do something similar for wood chips but I think the fine wood dust would be to light and continue into the fan, only way to find out is to try it, good luck

I agree with Jimbo. The reason the Cyclone Dust system works is the extreme centrifugal force slings the larger dust to the side walls of the conical tube and they fall out the bottom. But it still uses a filter for the fine particals. You might still need a filter in yours. Like Jimbo said only one way to find out, try it.

Torsten they use powerful fans to pull paint over spray from painting booths , and dust from sanding operations, and grease in restaurants through a filter element. Fast moving air will pull most of the dust right through your fan without something to stop it. Several people have set up a box arangement behind their dust making machine with a fan to pull the air through. The fans need to be shielded so they can only pull air through the filter. The filters can be washable with a garden hose, or the throw away kind used in air conditioning ahd heating installations.

hmm, so you think I would still need a vaccum bag... let's see. I'll build this basic setup in a short time and think of some additional features..

Not necessarily a bag, but there has to be something to slow the air flow enough for the dust to settle, or trap it. As fine as the dust is from scrolling it can fly a long way with the least of breezes so that is your problem with your cyclone idea. Which is why I suggested the flat AC type filter
We have 4 dogs and a cat in our house, their coats bring in fine dust and dander that ends up being pulled through our circulation fans and spread throught the house keeping the master duster (my wife) busy all the time cleaning it off surfaces. I have to periodically clean the cages and fan blades of dust and grime that sticks to them. What a mess!
If you are not in a big hurry I'll try to draw up a simple dust trap for you.

Possibly a few baffles and a larger outlet than the inlet would help slow the air back down but I think this dust is still so fine some would be going through your fans.

thx Gabby. This leads to a classic filter design.
I have a shop vacuum on which I can push a button to shake the filter, so that the dust is able to fall off. This could be an additional idea.
