Pattern help please

I've been trying to make this pattern in Gimp, but I guess I'm just not good enough yet. I was hoping maybe one of the experts here could give me a hand, this is for a dear friend of mine and I'd like to make this for her upcoming b-day.

Hi Bob, its only a small photo and with the subject being white I could not get a lot of detail but I gave it a go, hope its ok.....Paul
